BANDIDOS DE AMOR HAVANA BAND
and the SULTANS of MAMBO
The Bandidos put together two versions of their big band for a VSOP performance in Santa Barbara at the Pat Nesbit Polo Estate. The successful evening helped raise over 1/2 million dollars for charity.
The NUEVO FLAMENCO TRIO started off the evening performing instrumental world music during the silent auction, featuring: spanish guitar, cajon and El Professor/Larry G on 6 string bass.
The 13 pc SULTANS of MAMBO took over for the the dinner hour performing classic latin & latin jazz compositions to the delight of the very sophisticated audience.
After dinner, The BANDIDOS DE AMOR HAVANA BAND played a VSOP show, arranged and conducted by bassist, Larry G. Goldman, which included musical and dance recreations from "BOLERO", the 1934 film starring George Raft and Carole Lombard ... combining the original music & orchestral rhythms from Ravel with some modern latin dance rhythms.
From the same movie the Bandidos and dancers recreated the fabulous Sally Rand fan dance, combining this exotic dance with the classic song "Amado Mio", from the film noir film which featured the seductive & statuesque Rita Hayworth as "Gilda".
The BDA Havana Band included a brass section (2 trpts, bone and sax/flute), 3 latin percussionists (bongos, congos, timbales), a violinist, a pianist and 2 extra vocalists. We also had the help of Choreographer Extraordinaire, JoAnn Jansen whom we previously worked with in The Mexican (see separate news story below on The Mexican).
Cuban actor/dancer William Marquez, joined the Bandidos de Amor Havana band - re-enacting his unique "Dancing with a Lampost" scene for Andy Garcia's movie, The LOST CITY.
The highlight of the show segment was when the Bandidos de Amor brought to the stage special guest percussionist/drummer, Desi Arnaz Jr. With the assistance of Desi, Larry G. put together a special medley of Desi Arnaz's original Cuban Hits, "Babalú", (1946) and El Cumbanchero (1943) featuring Desi Jr. on a powerful percussion solo.

Bandidos Perform for Noted Kabbalah Rabbi
|
The Bandidos de Amor were invited to perform in honor of the birthday of Michael Berg.

Michael is the son of Rabbi Philip Berg (current Dean of the worldwide Kabbalah Centre organization) He created the first-ever contemporary English translation of The Zohar, requiring decades of research. Rabbi Berg opened the mysteries of this great text to the entire world through a 23 volume series, including the original Aramaic, English translation and full-commentary. It has already had the dramatic effect of greatly accelerating the dissemination of Kabbalistic knowledge, helping to make this great spiritual teaching available to people of different faiths all around the world who previously would have needed extensive training to fathom the text.
Celebrities Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher (also Demi's husband) and Gwyneth Paltrow, were among the many wonderful guests at Rabbi Berg's birthday celebration at a private estate in Beverly Hills, CA.

Demi is a practicing follower of the Rabbi Philip Berg's Kabbalah religion, and initiated Kutcher into the faith, having said that she "didn’t grow up Jewish, but... would say that [she has] been more exposed to the deeper meanings of particular rituals than any of [her] friends that did".
Gwyneth was born to the late film and television director Bruce Paltrow (who was Jewish) and Blythe Danner (who was raised a Quaker and is of Pennsylvania Dutch descent). Her paternal grandparents were Gertrud Goldman and Aaron Paltrow. She was born and raised in Santa Monica before marriying singer, Chris Martin (of the band Coldplay). Paltrow is a descendent of a famous 17th century Polish rabbi, David HaLevi Segal of Cracow, through the Russian rabbinical family, Paltrowitch, which produced thirty-three rabbis over several generations. The actress has said she is very proud of being Jewish, and has attributed her father's warmth to his Jewish heritage. Gwyneth came and celebrated along with all the guests honoring the Rabbi despite a minor injury to her leg that had her being assisted by a simple pair of crutches. She was lovely as ever.
Throughout the evening members of the audience danced to the Bandidos de Amor's fabulous flamenco rumba and gave the Bandidos de Amor lots of compliments. At the conclusion of the event the Bandidos presented the Rabbi with a couple of their CDs as a token of their appreciation for the Rabbi and his lovely wife, Monica Berg's invitation to come and perform for everyone that evening.

Hillary Clinton Joins Bandidos De Amor for a Good Time
|
The Bandidos de Amor were invited to perform at a Hillary Clinton fund raiser during her tour of Southern California this past October. There were rumors of protesters demonstrating at her appearances in Hollywood, but this wasn't the case in Orange County. Normally known as the bastion of the new Republican Yuppie Population, this party disproved that the general population of Orange County were exclusively all Reaganites......
After Hillary addressed the crowd, she gracefully acknowledged the Bandidos de Amor's earlier performance of their unique brand of California Style Rumba and had the photographer's snap a couple of shots with some of the guys in the band! |
